Origin of letter V

V shares its ancient origin with U, F, W, and Y — all descended from the Phoenician waw, a hook-shaped letter. The Romans used V for both the vowel /u/ and consonant /w/ sound; the distinction between U and V only became standard in European printing during the 16th and 17th centuries.
