Origin of letter G

G was invented by the Romans around the 3rd century BCE to distinguish the /g/ sound from /k/, both previously written as C. It was created by adding a small horizontal bar to the bottom of C, and was attributed to the Roman freedman Spurius Carvilius Ruga.
